Last Minute

I may have mentioned this before, but in Honduras…or at the very least at the Hogar, things usually happen with little forewarning. I should mention it’s almost always good things, while it always makes life interesting, it does make it harder to schedule time to do things – like talk with family and friends. An example of this would be yesterday. Last week we planned a dinner with the teachers for yesterday and I found out about an hour before it was supposed to happen that it had been cancelled and we were going to a concert two towns over. We had heard murmurings of the concert but I didn’t know what time it was, who was singing or where it was actually located. We assumed we were going to the concert after the dinner with the teachers and also assumed the concert was going to have a marching band hahah which is absolutely did not. Turns out we were leaving at 6, to go to Azacualpa, with the old padrinos (because we just got 6 new ones!) to see a famous Honduran singer preform Honduran style music.

Before we left, all of those leaving congregated by the front of the comedor (dinning hall) to get ready to go. All the adult ladies (volunteers/madrina’s) looked nice overall and all the boys that were leaving dinner must have been feeling weird because they all came over and were hugging us and saying que guapas and asking where we were going hahah. It was really odd, because that never happens. I think they got separation anxiety/didn’t want to share us with the general public.

At 6 we headed out in the pick–up to a local high school/technical high school. I have no idea when the concert was supposed to start but it did start around 8 and we got there at 6:30 aaha. The concert was outside and we were lucky because the sky was absolutely clear and it wasn’t cold or hot, just right. There were a lot of people there for the amount of people that live in the sourrounding towns and it was really fun to people watch. The opening acts were more folk kind of songs that are well-known but old school, the high-school had a few students preform and then the headlining singer got on stage and preforms. He was really awesome and played the guitar like nothing I’ve seen before.

Going out into public is always funny because we, the volunteers, are obviously a minority here but the people in the town over from us have mostly gotten used to seeing us so I haven’t felt like I was sticking out too much lately but last night we were the freak shows at the park hahah. 8 gringos walking around and a lot of staring. I find it pretty comical and sometimes I wish people would actually come talk to us instead of staring so we can figure out what their thinking about, but on the flipside the ones who do come up to talk are usually inappropriate so it’d be a double edged sword. Regardless of the staring we had a really awesome time and the people I did meet were really friendly.

We ended up leaving the concert a little after ten, drove to a pulperia to get snacks and drinks and hung out by the river until 1am. It was the latest I’ve been out since the US and we honestly just had a lot of fun. It was a good way to bond with the padrinos, to let off some steam and to get away from working. The best part of the night for me was when Christian asked Madrina Karen (who has a 15 year-old son) to teach him how to dance and she put on club music and danced reaaaal close haha. She’s an awesome dancer! And promised to give us real dance lessons in the future 🙂

This weekend we have two visitors from the states coming! And naturally there is a dance party to welcome them, so it’s time to break out my new dance moves again 🙂 check it

Happy friday to all and have an enjoyable weekend!!
